Upma with Sweet Poha

1/2 cup jaggery
3/4 cup grated fresh coconut(use white part only)
1 cup poha/ avalakki/ beaten rice(adjust accordingly)
2 tblsp roasted til/sesame seeds (black or white)
2 tsp cardamom pdr
2 tsp ghee(optional)


  • Take jaggery in a kadai,add ghee and 1/4 cup water and make it boil
  • Once the jaggery melts and starts boiling ,and the syrup becomes lil thick add coconut gratings ,and cook for 5 mins
  • Add sesame seeds and cardamom pdr and mix well 
  • This is the base of this dish called CHOORAN
  • Once the chooran  completely comes to room temperature add poha and mix well 
  • And your Godu phovu is ready to serve !!


1 cup fine rava /bombay rava/fine semolina
3 slit green chillies
1 sprig curry leaves
4 tblsp ghee/oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
2 tsp urad dal
6 chopped cashew nuts
Salt and sugar to taste
4 tblsp fresh coconut gratings

  • Dry roast the rava till light brown or nice aroma comes and keep aside
  • In same pan heat ghee ,add mustard,when it starts crackling put urad dal,cashew nuts and fry till they  become light brown in colour
  • Add curry leaves,chopped green chillies and fry for a minute
  • Add 2 cups water , salt and sugar
  • Once the water gets boiling ,simmer the gas and add roasted rava ,mix well 
  • Cook with a lid covered till rava is cooked
  • Now add fresh grated coconut , mix well and serve hot.
