Hyderabadi Khatti Dal

1 cup boiled toor dal/ yellow lentil
2 finely chopped tomatoes
8 finely chopped garlic cloves
1 sliced green chilli
1/2 tsp turmeric pdr
1 tsp red chilli pdr
1 dry red chilli
curry leaves
1 tsp cumin seeds
2 tsp lemon juice or tamarind juice
Salt to taste
Chopped coriander leaves for garnishing
5 tsp oil
2 tsp ghee 


  • Heat oil in a pan ,put,cumin seeds,when starts crackling add,curry leaves,chopped garlic and fry till light brown
  • Add dry chilli,green chilli and fry for a minute
  • Add turmeric pdr,red chilli pdr ,chopped tomatoes and fry till tomato becomes pulpy
  • Add boiled dal,salt and little water,make it boil for 5 mins
  • Garnish with chopped coriander leaves
  • Add ghee and lime juice before serving
  • Serve hot dal with hot roti,chapati or parathas!!

  1. I tried this and it turned out really well. The only addition I made was due to family preference, and that was adding a very small amount of jaggery. Everything else was exactly as written in the recipe.
